JOANINA LIBRARY & ROMAN RUINS OF CONIMBRIGA AND MUSEUM
GUIDED TOUR

Come and discover one of the most beautiful libraries in the world. Space of rare beauty, historical dimension and great wealth in its collection. Integrated in The Palace of Schools, we will also visit the beautiful Saint Michael’s Chapel, the Great Hall of Acts, the Private Examination Room, the Arms Room and the Iron Gate. Then we continue to an important historical legacy that are the Roman Ruins of Conímbriga. Populated since prehistoric times. A journey back in time to a space of immense beauty. We finish the visit at the Monographic Museum where we can observe its diversified collection and that materializes the historical evolution of the place, between the end of the second millennium BC and the sixth century of the Christian era.
- Joanina Library -
In its important process of conservation are employed traditional solutions of preservation and environmental control, most notably the use of oak wood on their shelves, the thickness of the walls, with about 2 meters, and the existence of a colony of bats that protects the library of the insects. At night, after the library closing, the colony of bats contributes to good maintenance of books thru eating the insects. The tables are covered with skins that protect them from the waste of the animals.
The gold you see in its decor came from Minas Gerais, Brazil and the wood is African, Eastern and Brazilian.

“Definitely a trip in time”
Visit with a huge historical dimension and a rare beauty. The Joanina Library is an absolutely magical place. The energy that emanates from the Ruins of Conimbriga reminds us of what that place was many centuries ago. Excellent work of the guide Bernardo. Highly recommend.
