THE MOST BEAUTIFUL LIBRARIES OF THE WORLD
GUIDED TOUR
COIMBRA | ÓBIDOS | MAFRA
Portugal has two of the most beautiful libraries in the world, the Baroque library (Joanina) of the University of Coimbra and the Library of Mafra National Palace. Absolutely incantatory spaces, unique and singular in its architectural wealth and assets together. In between this fascinating excursion, a visit to the town of Obidos, which along with its amazing medieval beauty became the first portuguese literary village, where books come to occupy unexpected spaces such as churches, markets, museums and more.
- Óbidos (Literary village) -
A village of rare beauty, with white houses adorned with bougainvilleas and honeysuckles, keeps in its essence centuries of history. It was conquered from the moors by the first King of Portugal, Afonso Henriques, in 1148. Medieval atmosphere made of charm, winding streets, old whitewashed houses with corners painted blue or yellow, spans and Manueline-style windows (King Manuel I) adorned with huge, beautiful flowers and colorful plants. In these streets still run stories of brave knights, kings and their queens.
Óbidos is considered Literary village since June 13, 2015.

“Highly recommend”
The beauty of the Joanina Library as well as the Mafra Palace Library is breathtaking. Spaces of magic and an endless patrimony. The visit to the University of Coimbra is unmissable. I loved the Chapel of S. Miguel. Its painted ceiling is extraordinary. Óbidos is a village to get lost in every corner. Books scattered across different spaces create an atmosphere for me never seen before. I loved being able to buy a book of poems within what was once a church. There are several places to taste the delicious local cuisine. Highly recommend. Absolute professionalism. The guide Bernardo was extremely friendly with us, moreover, and most importantly for me, demonstrate a deep knowledge and passion of the spaces we visited.
